“Donald Adam treated my leg with foam sclerotherapy, and I’m thrilled with the results! I have had varicose veins for years, but four months after treatment, there is no sign of them. The procedure was painless, and I only had slight temporary bruising afterwards. I can’t wait to have the other leg treated!”
The Difference Between Thread Veins and Varicose Veins
Thread and varicose veins are forms of a medical condition called venous insufficiency. Both occur when valves in the veins become weakened or damaged. However, the symptoms associated with varicose veins and thread veins are different.
Varicose Veins
If the valves in your leg veins stop pumping, it causes blood that should go up to go down. The result? Varicose veins. These lumpy and twisted blue or purple veins cause symptoms such as uncomfortable, swollen and achy legs. They are pretty common, affecting about a third of UK adults. Varicose veins are usually larger and are located deeper within the leg than spider veins.
Thread veins
Commonly known as spider veins, these tiny blue or red vessels sit close to the skin’s surface. They can appear in small clusters or spread across the legs and body. Most of the time, thread veins are painless, but they may itch sometimes or cause a burning sensation. As we get older, our skin gets thinner, so it’s more likely that you, and others, will notice thread veins.
The good news is that, with the right treatment, it is easy to remedy varicose and thread veins.

Patient-Tailored Treatments
We offer a choice of highly effective and reliable treatments for all types of varicose and thread veins, depending on what’s right for you.
Radiofrequency Ablation
Best suited to treating trunk varicose veins. We use radiofrequency (like laser), carried out under local anaesthetic. It’s minimally invasive keyhole treatment, so you should be up and about very quickly.
Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS)
Often best suited to superficial veins, this walk-in, walk-out treatment uses local anaesthetic, and clever foam detergent that gets rid of the problematic veins. It works very well alongside Endothermal Ablation.
Veinlite Transilluminated Microsclerotherapy
This well-established procedure improves the appearance of thread or spider veins. We use a liquid that helps the body absorb the veins naturally. There’s no need for anaesthetic or a hospital stay.
